It’s that time of the year again – when I only just got used to writing 2018 on the date and suddenly, I have to readjust again. Seriously, anyone else? The struggle is real for me!
It seems like 2018 came and went with the blink of an eye – and it was one huge adventure for me. I set up as a Photography business in the summer of 2016, so it has been my first full calendar with Anni’s Looking Glass. I could not have imagined the ride I’ve been on!
We’ve spent the turn of the year just like we started 2018 and it has become a bit of a tradition now: First, we see my family in Germany, spend New Year’s Eve with one of my best friends rom high school and then see my partner’s father in Luxembourg. I tend to use that first week of the year to reflect on the previous year and make my business plan and decide on the direction for the new year. Moreover, I always catch up on photo editing, as there always seem to be some unedited images floating about on my hard drive and this year I photographed my friend’s super adorable Beagle puppy. Isn’t she a beauty?
Reflecting on 2018, it has been a year of exponential growth for me. I have been photographing horses and dogs for a long time now – and I started my business as an equine and pet photographer. I’ve been blessed to once again have several stunning horses and dogs in front of my camera in the last twelve months. One of my highlights came late in the year, when I went to Northamptonshire just before Christmas and photographed Lisa and her Sparks. He is a beautiful coloured cob – I have a weakness for this type of horse anyway – but he is a trick pony and participates in jousting – how awesome is that!?
However, I could not be happier how much my business has expanded beyond equine and canine photography in the past year and it is this growth that I want to celebrate and build on in 2019.
Personal Branding Photography for small business owners and microbusinesses
The seed for this idea was planted in 2017, when I took headshots of western riding instructor Henrike Lindenblatt and provided images for Alena’s Pawsitive Dog School to promote their agility classes. I realised that there is actually a real need for natural, relaxed and affordable custom photography content for small business owners and microbusinesses. Last year I have created different packages to suit a diverse range of needs, ranging from updated headshots (e.g. for your website or LinkedIn) to more complex brand photography. I have also held my first day of personal branding mini sessions at MinorOak Coworking in Nottingham. I will be looking to host another of these, perhaps in a different city (I’m thinking Leicester or Derby?) If you know of a great venue to host this or are interested in getting some more information once this minis session day takes shape, please drop me a message.
I have done family photography before, but in 2018 I’ve taken on more family clients than before and I feel I’ve really started to develop my own style of guiding the session and freezing real moments between parents and their children in my photos. I have always liked the idea of candid family photography but at the same time I know how important it is to keep your children engaged. Therefore, I have perfected my prompts to use and family games to play throughout the session to achieve exactly the kind of laid-back look that my clients appreciate. I feel like in 2018 I have grown from a pet photographer to a family photographer (although it seems like many of them also have dogs) - and I love that change.
I have only photographed three mums-to-be last year. However, when I photographed Jade among the bluebells in the Outwoods near Loughborough, I completely fell in love with the art of photographing baby bumps! There is just nothing like documenting the miracle of life growing in a mother’s body and capturing the emotional bond she has to her baby even before it’s born. I know this may sounds cliché but it’s absolute gold for the kind of emotive, story-telling portraits that I love to take.
I’ve started to stock up on some gorgeous maternity gowns for my clients to use for their sessions. I’ll release more information and shall be introducing special pricing just for maternity sessions in due course, so watch this space.
I’ve first dipped my toes into wedding photography in 2017, when I started working a second shooter alongside more experienced wedding photographers. I’ve built on that work in 2018 and have also photographed one wedding by myself. No matter whether I am the sole photographer or assisting a colleague, I love being part of such a special day. If you are happily married, your wedding images are probably the ones you keep going back to, same as your baby’s newborn photos or your children’s first school portraits.I want to take on more weddings as a main photographer this year and my soon-to-come website updated will include some basic packages for brides and grooms to choose from. For now you can find all the relevant information here.
So if you know anyone that got engaged this Christmas, I would be ever so grateful if you could send them my way!
